Cake Price and Margin
One cake in, a selling price out: ingredients, your time, supplies and margin.
Batch Recipe Cost is a recipe costing calculator for cake bakers. Type in the ingredients of one recipe and how many cakes the batch makes. The sheet adds up the batch and gives you the cost per cake.

Batch Recipe Cost adds every ingredient line into a batch cost, then divides it by the number of cakes the batch makes. Each line carries a part, such as sponge, filling or frosting, so the sheet also shows what each part costs. You type the pack cost, the pack amount and the amount you use.
Type the part (sponge, filling, frosting), the ingredient, what a pack costs, how much is in the pack and how much you use. Use the same unit for both amounts.
Type the number on the first row only. Leave it blank and the sheet shows a word, not an error.
Batch cost divided by the cakes from the batch, plus what each part costs: sponge, filling and frosting.
June Hale’s cardamom pear layer cake: ten ingredient lines, 11.76 dollars a batch, two cakes, 5.88 dollars a cake.
A blank template makes you guess what goes where. Here a real sample is in every cell, so you see the sums work before you type a thing. Then clear the sample with one range name and use your own recipe.
Each line has a part: sponge, filling or frosting. The sheet totals each part, so you see where a cake’s cost really sits. In the sample, the sponge costs 4.60 dollars, the filling 3.60 dollars and the frosting 3.56 dollars.
Excel opens the .xlsx file as it is. For Google Sheets, upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Google Sheets. There is a How to use tab in the file.
Each file stands alone. These three are the ones bakers open side by side.

One cake in, a selling price out: ingredients, your time, supplies and margin.

Every cake you sell with cost, price and margin, and a check on each price.

This week’s cake orders turned into a buy list of ingredients.
Work out what each ingredient costs for the amount you use: pack cost divided by pack amount, times amount used. Add the lines for the batch cost, then divide by the number of cakes the batch makes. Batch Recipe Cost does these sums for every line and shows the cost per cake.
